Competition for the Switzer Fellowships is intense. There are typically over 150 applicants for the ten fellowships in each region. Please make sure you meet all of the Fellowship eligibility requirements and carefully follow the application procedures below. An applicant for a Switzer Environmental Fellowship must:

• be a US citizen;
• be enrolled in an accredited graduate institution in California or New England;
• have strong academic qualifications; and
• have academic and career goals focused on environmental improvement, regardless of the school, major or program in which they are enrolled.

In addition:

• The applicant must plan to be enrolled as a full time student for the entire ’11-’12 academic year in order to be considered.
• Master’s degree candidates must have completed at least one semester of course work to apply and be seeking the Master’s as a terminal degree. Master’s degree students planning to pursue a PhD are advised to wait until they are in their PhD program to apply.
• Individuals enrolled in one-year Master’s degree programs may apply prior to enrollment, but must be formally accepted into their program to be eligible for a Fellowship interview. Interviews take place in May.
• Applicants at the PhD level must plan to have completed at least three years of Doctoral work by July 1, 2011, or plan to have passed their qualifying exams by May 1, 2011. Please note that PhD candidates with a clear research and career focus are more competitive than individuals who are still undecided or early in their academic program.
• Mid-Career students may apply and must demonstrate how their academic program will enhance their effectiveness as an environmental professional.
• All applicants and recommenders should be aware that the Switzer Environmental Fellowship looks for environmental leadership potential as well as research topic of the applicant.

The Windstar Foundation, co-founded by John Denver and Thomas Crum, has consistently sought ways, “To inspire individuals to make responsible choices and take direct personal actions to achieve a peaceful and environmentally sustainable future.” With this mission in mind, the Windstar Foundation is awarding two $500 scholarships for qualified undergraduates entering their junior or senior year of college, as well as one $1000 scholarship for graduate students entering their second year of graduate school.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

• The applicant must be a U.S. student enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university majoring in Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering Program or a college degree focused on environmental studies.
• Undergraduates must be entering their junior or senior year of college.
• Graduate students must be entering their second year of graduate school.
• The applicant shall have a college GPA of 3.0 or better in his or her major field.

The Surfrider Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, for all people, through Conservation, Activism, Research and Education. Specific attention is placed on the preservation and enhancement of public access to coastal areas; maintenance and improvement of water quality; and the preservation of surf breaks.

Several awards will be made to students who are members in good standing of the Surfrider Foundation, annually, based upon available funds and exceptional applications.

Eligibility Criteria:
A. Must be a member in good standing of the Surfrider Foundation and embrace the spirit of the Mission and Guiding Principles of the Surfrider Foundation, which guide and govern the activities of the organization. Must be a student enrolled in an accredited College or University (in the U.S. or Internationally) during the upcoming academic year. Undergraduates (of at least Junior standing) with a minimum GPA of 3.4 for all coursework, and graduate students (minimum 9 credits completed) with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 are eligible. Both full and part time students are welcome to apply.

B. Clearly demonstrate interest in coastal environmental science and issues relevant to the Surfrider Foundation Mission as well as contribution(s) to advancing the public interest in such issues, as evidenced by both of the following.
1. A major field of study pertaining to oceanography, marine affairs, environmental sciences, public policy, community planning or natural resources.
2. Participation in cooperative or independent research, environmental activities or work experience related to the above mentioned disciplines.
